Below are some of our nature-inspired innovations for global healthcare solutions.
Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) is one of the most powerful and yet by far the safest of disinfectants available today. Composed of one oxygen atom, one chlorine atom, and one hydrogen atom, HOCl is naturally produced by humans and almost all vertebrate animals in response to infection and injury. When any invading germ is detected, neutrophils, a type of white blood cell, react by making HOCl instantly at the site of infection.
Advantages of HOCl for healthcare uses:
The advantages that Medesol Health brings to deployment and commercialization of HOCl lie in the company’s unmatched deep familiarity with the chemistry, biochemistry, physiology, pathophysiology, microbiology and healing properties of this remarkable compound, enabling an approach to its applications that is fundamentally different from historical and largely unsuccessful manufacturers of high-quality product in the past. Using proprietary manufacturing methods that allow for large volume production of consistently pure, stable HOCl in its most potent form, we can make it available cost-effectively for a wide range of healthcare uses, including as aerosols, wound washes, footbaths, instrument sterilizing soaks, irrigation line sanitation, bandage soaks, oral and eye rinses, and more. We do not have to rely on high-margin sales of pharmaceutically registered end products in the failed business model pursued by prominent publicly traded companies in recent years.
Medesol Health has a unique position with respect to yet another emerging option for deployment of ‘solid phase’ active Cl for healthcare benefits: the production and use of N-chlorotaurine (NCT). This compound is a powerful derivative of Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl), formed naturally when HOCl reacts with Taurine, the most abundant amino acid in the body. NCT plays a critical role in the body’s defensive responses to infection and injury, providing a more controlled and sustained antimicrobial effect compared to the rapid, high intensity but short-lived action of HOCl; its immediate knock-out punch against pathogens gets followed up with persistent , ongoing effectiveness of NCT to ensure the continued control of germs, and all the while stimulating the healing events that lead to repair and restoration of normal tissue structure and function.
The key advantage of NCT as a potential active Cl product lies in its stability as a solid, following synthesis via chemical processes. Unlike HOCl, NCT can be formulated into solutions and gels with much higher concentrations — 1%, 5%, or even 10% — making it suitable for applications requiring prolonged local antimicrobial and healing enhancing action. NCT formulations as solutions or gels can be stored for years, with far lower dependence on water content, offering practical advantages for packaging, storage and shipment that are simply unattainable with dilute solutions of HOCl.
Medesol Health is uniquely positioned to capitalize on the potential of NCT. Although NCT has been studied extensively over the past 30 years, it has only been produced in small, lab-scale quantities. We have first-hand experience over several years of laboratory research with synthetic generation of NCT and its analytical characterization in ways that enable us to tackle and evaluate optimization of scaled up production of NCT. Successful high-volume production would be a transforming event in efforts to realize the extraordinary potential of this compound and its applications in healthcare. While NCT as a natural product cannot itself be patented, proprietary methods developed for its large-scale production can be so protected, securing Medesol Health’s competitive advantage in the market.
The synergy between HOCl and NCT in the targeted Medesol Health portfolio offers compelling advantages over conventional healthcare interventions. HOCl, whether produced naturally in the body (indigenous HOCl) or applied externally (exogenous HOCl), acts swiftly to eliminate pathogens and initiate healing processes. NCT, in turn, sustains these effects, maintaining antimicrobial action over an extended period and facilitating the body’s repair and recovery. This dual-action strategy allows for the rapid disinfection provided by HOCl, followed by the prolonged and stable healing support offered by NCT. NCT has been proven to excel in treatment of infections at sensitive sites such as wounds, eyes, gums, ears, and mucous membranes. Its ability to kill germs while promoting healing will make it an invaluable tool in speeding recovery, relieving pain, sealing injured sites, and restoring tissues to their normal state.
This integration of HOCl and NCT technologies offers a versatility and power for a wide range of medical applications, from rapid pathogen elimination to sustained healing and recovery. Medesol Health’s innovative approach will put us at the forefront of this emerging field, providing us opportunities to transform therapeutic practices and improve patient outcomes.
As we continue to innovate, we are exploring additional promising technologies that have the potential to significantly impact antimicrobial effectiveness and healing measures.
Hypobromous Acid (HOBr)
One of our key areas of innovation focuses on Hypobromous Acid (HOBr), a compound that is ten times more effective than Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) as an anti-viral agent. Despite its superior efficacy, HOBr has faced significant challenges in commercial applications due to its extremely short lifespan and the hazardous nature of its traditional production method, which involves reacting dangerous bromine gas with water.
Our novel and eminently practical mode of generating HOBr allows us to overcome these barriers by enabling the safe and controlled production of the compound wherever it is needed. This breakthrough opens the door to the potential commercial exploitation of HOBr in a range of applications. HOBr is particularly effective against certain hard-to-kill viruses opening the door for a highly potent antimicrobial duo of HOBr and HOCl, offering a broader and more robust spectrum of microbial control. This synergistic approach is ideally suited for enhancing disinfection processes in environments where stringent sanitation is critical, such as healthcare settings, water treatment facilities, and food processing plants.
N-bromotaurine (NBrT)
N-bromotaurine (NBrT) is another compound under consideration for commercial applications. Formed when taurine reacts with Hypobromous Acid (HOBr) in vivo, NBrT shares similar antimicrobial properties with its more studied counterpart, N-chlorotaurine (NCT).
While NBrT has been less extensively researched than NCT, its proven potential for superior power in specific therapeutic applications could be helpful in advancing medical management of certain conditions.
The presence of a bromine atom in NBrT may provide unique reactivity and stability characteristics, potentially making it more effective under certain conditions or against specific types of pathogens. The distinct chemical properties of NBrT could offer new avenues for treatment, particularly in challenging environments or against resistant strains of bacteria and viruses.
Through the exploration and potential commercialization of these technologies, we aim to expand our portfolio of unprecedented solutions to better address critical needs in healthcare and sanitation.
